With the Tarmac 2, Racecomp Engineering has taken an already great product and made it better. KW's Variant 3 is an excellent product, but uses a fairly soft rear spring. This is great for ride comfort, but not so great for handling. The RCE T2 starts with equal spring rates front and rear which we feel is necessary on the 08+ chassis. The rear spring rate can even be higher compared to the front due to the differences in motion ratio; up front, the spring rate and wheel rate are nearly the same, but in the rear, due to the design of the suspension, the wheel rate is actually much less. Many of the available coilover systems use softer rear springs despite this, which will result in poor handling and terminal understeer. With it's better matched spring rates, the Tarmac 2 provides improved handling balance and less understeer than the V3 and most other coilovers.
In addition to more appropriate spring rates, and different colors and labels, Racecomp Engineering has also made a few changes to the internal valving of the dampers. By using a few parts from the next level up clubsport damper and their own shim stack, these have a valving profile more compatible with track use and higher spring rates. At lower settings they will still offer great ride quality on the street, but are equally at home on the track with sticky tires and stiffer springs, a situation the standard V3 would not handle as well. If you are looking for a quality suspension system with an emphasis on street driving and comfort, standard KW products are a great choice. But for better performance, and any track or auto-x use, we highly recommend the RCE version.
The damper housings are made from "INOX" stainless steel to prevent corrosion and have external piggyback reservoirs to increase fluid volume and cooling capacity. Adjustable spring perches are made of composite material to prevent corrosion and seizure, so you will still be able to adjust these after a few years of use. The damping is adjustable in both compression and rebound while many of the less expensive coilovers have one knob that may only adjust rebound, or have undesirable cross talk between the force curves. Having independent adjustments allows better control of both ride quality and handling performance.
